Events in observance of Black History Month, 2011: The Kentucky Raid is the topic of a February 2nd lecture at the Museum at Southwestern MI College (58900 Cherry Grove Rd. Dowagiac).. Artist, Ruth Andrews, will tell the stories of “Sanctuary and Deliverance” at 6:30pm in the Museum's Upton Room. The lecture will cover the local 1847 story that inspired the outdoor mural in Cassopolis. MI. For information call 269-782-1374.
The second event is the Minority Coalition sponsored Black History Breakfast on Tuesday, February 15th, starting at 7:30 am at the Cassopolis VFW (located at 131 South Broadway). The guest is speaker, Greg Weatherspoon and the event's theme is “Look How Far We've Come” celebrating Brown Vs the Board of Education.
On February 22, 2011 at 12:30 at the COA Council on Aging (located at 60525 Decatur Road). Dr. Veta Tucker will highlight the events of the 1847 Kentucky Raid on Cass County and the nonviolent solution to this local (Vandalia/ Cassopolis) historical conflict. The events of the Raid are represented in the outdoor mural that was unveiled in October 2010 in Cassopolis, MI. Dr. Tucker is the lead scholar in the Sanctuary and Deliverance Project and has written a book on the 1847 Kentucky Raid in Cass County. Please call COA at 800-323-0390 for details.
